5 Tips for Painting Your Garage

|

As Spring is rolling around and you’re putting together your summer pPaint your garage with Paint of WNYroject list, now is the perfect time to paint your garage. It may seem overwhelming though, and you likely have a lot of questions on what the best way to do it. How do I start? What tools do I need? Is there anything I need to keep in mind?

To make it simple, we’ve compiled a list of 5 of our best tips used to paint your garage. These tips come from our trained professional and will help you paint like a pro.

1.) Start with the Prep

Don’t underestimate the importance of proper preparation. Before you even start painting the walls, you want to make sure you seal any cracks and seams. This will help the paint sit better, creating a smooth finish. You can do this with some paint caulk, a caulk gun and some sandpaper.

In the prep step, you also want to include cleaning the walls. Being a garage, dirt and grease can easily accumulate on the walls. This can get in the way of the paint adhering to the surface of the wall and drying for a smooth finish. While it may seem tedious, you’ll be happy that you took the time once you see the result

2.) Paint the Floor Too

While this may seem unnecessary, it’s a great way to add to the space and put something else on the floor besides a slab of concrete. We recommend using an epoxy to do this (or have us help you with this). You’ll also want to keep in mind that you’ll need to select a concrete paint for your floor.

You may also want to paint the ceiling of your garage. Get a fresh coat on every side of your garage. If you do paint your garage ceiling, start there instead of the walls.

3.) Dark Colors Make the Space Seem Smaller

Some of the same paint color “rules” for the inside of your house apply to your garage as well. Like with any room inside your house, a dark color on the walls will make the garage look smaller and more crapped. Since most garage spaces don’t have a lot of natural light when the door is closed, this is something you definitely want to keep in mind.

4.) Don’t Underestimate the Importance of a Primer

A good primer will be your best friend – especially if you're going from a darker color to a lighter color. A good primer will save you time and have your final coat looking its best. You can even use a tinted primer that’s close to the final color you’ll be painting your walls.
